Acupuncture points for sleep

The number of people suffering from sleeping disorders or insomnia is increasing alarmingly in the United States as well as other parts of the globe. Although the reason for sleep disorder varies among average American, they are mostly caused be severe emotional depression and stress, alcoholism, disorder in circadian rhythm, CNS diseases, bipolar disorder, medications, restless leg syndrome, menopause, etc. Although these are diagnosis of conventional medical practices there is little they can do other than prescribe some sleeping pills to give you a temporary relief.

TOM or traditional oriental medicine considers that the conditions mentioned above causes zang-fu or disruption of meridian theory. TOM diagnosis does not involve the conventional medical tests but rather identified by symptoms the patients display. Patient is, hence, said to have insomnia if the easily wakes up at night, waking up early in the morning even if he sleeps late, or waking up at a specific time very early, sleep is disrupted by dreams or finds it difficult to fall asleep.

Each of these conditions are caused by imbalance of energy in one part of the body or the other. The frequent sleep disruption is caused by a deficiency of heart yin, while dream-disruption sleep is caused by shen imbalance, or difficulty in sleeping is caused by replete patterns in the stomach, liver and gallbladder.

The TOM is not only successful in identifying the cause of sleeplessness but is also successful in providing a cure. Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine, treats insomnia by inserting hair thin needles at various depths in acupuncture points for sleep. This excites the pressure points causing restoration of the imbalance that was caused, thus curing the condition.

The acupuncture points for sleep that a practitioner triggers are as follows:

Auricular shen men or heavenly gate in Chinese is located in the year and is the primary focus for all acupuncture specialists. Alongside treating this with needle, patients are also provided with a transparent tape with numerous balls attached so that they can stick it on the ear and gently press it to stimulate this acupuncture point for sleep.

HT 7 shen men is a point in the heart meridian and is located in wrist crease. The point is associated with Yuan, shu and earth points and is also a primary acupuncture point for sleep.

Other acupuncture points for sleep include Yinqiao and yangqiao, PC 6 Neiguan, and Yintang.
